Discord is a well-known group chatting application that was originally made for gaming in 2015.

However, with more than 390 million users from all parts of the world, the application now allows you to create group chats for a wide range of topics like writing, movies, politics, etc.

One of the best aspects of Discord is that you can easily set up your Discord server very easily, whether you simply want to create a chatroom with your friends or build your own community.

No matter what device you use, like a smartphone, browser, or desktop, creating a Discord server has never been easier.

In this article, we will talk about how you can set up a good Discord server.

Steps For Setting Up A Discord Server

As mentioned previously, creating a Discord server is very easy. The first step here is to download the application for the device (Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, or Windows).

Or, you could simply open its web interface. In both scenarios, you will have to create your profile to move ahead.

Once done, you simply need to log into your account. In this stage, you will be asked whether you want to join an existing server or create a new one.

If you want to create a new server, you need to tap on the large ‘+’ symbol in the Discord interface.

Once you do so, you need to click on the ‘Create a Server’ button, which will allow you to create a new server.

Create a Server

You need to name your server and choose the region; in most cases, the region is detected automatically. Tap on the ‘Create’ button to complete the process.

Creating Channels On Your Discord Server

The main component of a Discord server is the Channel; this is the place where conversations take place. Typically, these channels are separated by topic so that there is no clogging in the chatroom.

At your Discord server, you will find two types of channels – text and voice channels. By default, your Discord server will be on one channel called ‘General’.

Here are the steps for creating new channels on your Discord server:

  1. Tap on the ‘+’ button on the left side of the screen. Here, you can select either the ‘Voice Channel’ or the ‘Text Channel’ to create a new channel on the server. As you may have guessed by the names, voice channels allow you to talk and/or stream videos while text channels only allow you to type and/or send media files like videos, images, etc.
  2. Name your channel. If you are using the Discord mobile application, you will also have the choice to make the channel private.
  3. For customizing your channel, you need to tap on the ‘gear’ icon, which is located next to the name of the channel. Here, you will find options like editing the name of the channel and changing the permissions, topics, etc. You will also find the ‘Delete’ option to delete the channel, which will automatically delete all the messages as well.
  4. For editing the channel categories of your Discord servers, you simply need to tap-and-hold or right-click the heading of the category and then click on ‘Edit Category’. The channel categories are the headings that appear above the Discord channel.
  5. Once the ‘Edit Category’ menu opens up, you will be able to change the permissions or the name of the category; this is a great way to quickly edit several channels that need to be restricted.

Designating Roles To Your Discord Channels

If you have a lot of channels on your Discord servers, you could certainly use a hand or two in enforcing the rules. For this, you can always appoint certain members with the powers to set up the rules of the channels.

This feature is known as ‘Roles’; here is how you can do it:

  1. Tap on the name of your Discord server and then on the ‘Settings’ button; here, click on the ‘Roles’ button.
  2. In the next windows, you will be able to choose the members for the Admin role. Here, you will also be able to choose their abilities on the channels. All you need to do is toggle the abilities off or on.
  3. Once done, you simply need to save the changes and exit the menu. The user will now have the powers you have assigned to them.
